Red-hot Kylie greets Prince Charles with a big smile at The Palladium after his terrifying car attack on way to the Royal Variety Show

Good evening, your Highness! Kylie Minogue greets Prince Charles with a beaming smile as she meets him inside The Palladium at last night's Royal Variety Performance

If anyone could help a man laugh off his blues, then surely Kylie Minogue is the woman for the job.

The pop star certainly helped put a smile back on Prince Charles's face as she greeted him at the Royal Variety Performance last night just moments after his car was attacked by a mob of anarchists.

His Royal Highness looked like Miss Minogue was just the tonic he needed after the attack in which he and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall were surrounded by a baying mob just yards away from The Palladium.

As the Prince walked into The Palladium theatre in central London, he came face-to-face with the Australian superstar, who looked just as delighted to see him.

And they appeared to share a joke as they shook hands and greeted each other warmly at the annual concert.

Her choice of outfit surely didn't go unnoticed either as she stood out from everyone else in a tiny red leather dress with matching lace-up, thigh-high heeled peep-toed boots.

As she and the Prince chatted, Take That's Gary Barlow waited patiently next to them for his turn to meet the Royal, but also seemed to share the joke as he looked on with a grin.

Having enjoyed the brief but no doubt delightful encounter with Miss Minogue, Charles then greeted Barlow and the rest of the band.

The newly-reunited pop group - who recently welcomed member Robbie Williams back into the fold - performed at the event along with Kylie.

It was also the first time they performed on the show as a five-piece since 1994, and treated fans to two songs.

The Prince then met hip-hop group N-Dubz and Charles was overheard talking to frontman Dappy - real name Dino Contostavlos - asking him about his checked suit.

Relaxed and rigid: While Kylie looked at ease upon meeting the Prince, Barlow's smile looked almost forced, suggesting he was nervous

Also among the big names performing on stage last night was X Factor judge and pop star Cheryl Cole - who sang her new single The Flood - and former Kinks frontman Ray Davies.

The black-tie Royal Variety Performance is one of the highlights of the entertainment world and raises thousands for charity.

An all-star comedy line-up included routines from Liverpool's king of comedy John Bishop, Edinburgh Fringe Festival Best Newcomer Sarah Millican, new funniest kid on the block Jack Whitehall and favourite East End geezer Micky Flanagan.

Britain's Got Talent winners Spelbound, double Gold medallists at this year's Acrobatic Gymnastic Championships, performed a spectacular brand new routine.

The people's tenor Russell Watson delivered a performance of Parla Piu Piano, best known as the love theme from The Godfather, while the Chelsea Pensioners gave a rendition of a If You Were The Only Girl (In The World).

It was hosted by comedian Michael McIntyre who said ahead of the show: 'I am unbelievably excited to be hosting the Royal Variety Performance this year at the London Palladium in its centenary year.

'It is a dream come true to be introducing the likes of Take That, Cheryl Cole and Prince Charles's own personal booking N-Dubz.'

Charles and Camilla were visibly shaken after their armoured car was targeted as they made their way to the concert.

The car was daubed in paint and a rear window shattered as protesters vented their fury after MPs voted to raise tuition fees.

Camilla later joked about the incident, saying 'First time for everything as she left the Palladium.
